What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a very rare and serious neurological disorder in which the immune system accidentally attacks peripheral nerves. It can result in sudden weakness of muscles, numbness or even temporary paralysis. The symptoms typically start in the legs and increase in elevation, often making breathing difficult and requiring urgent medical attention. Recovery is not impossible but it could take from months or even years to recover. It is often necessary for systematic rehabilitation in order to recover strength as well as coordination and self-reliance.

Common Challenges with Guillain-Barré Syndrome

GBS usually begins with muscle weakness beginning in the legs, and expanding upwards, becoming completely paralyzed within days.

The sensory impairments and weaknesses can make standing, walking, and everyday activities extremely challenging and often lead to a short-term dependence on other people.

In extreme instances, GBS affects breathing muscles which requires assisted ventilation and constant monitoring in the acute phase.

The persistent fatigue even after a short period of physical activity, is a common occurrence when recovering and can stifle progression if not controlled properly.

Numbness, tingling or an altered sensations in the limbs may hinder balance, coordination, as well as security.

The sudden onset and unclear timeframe for recovery can trigger depression, anxiety and emotional distress for families and patients alike.
