PHYSICAL Therapy for BRAIN Injuries

What is a brain injury?

A brain injury refers to any damage that occurs to the brain due to external trauma, internal factors, or neurological conditions. These injuries can range from mild concussions to severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and can result in a wide array of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impairments.

Brain injuries can be broadly categorized into two main types: traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and acquired brain injuries (ABI).  Each type of brain injury can vary in severity and the resulting symptoms, ranging from mild cognitive impairment to significant physical and neurological deficits. Treatment and rehabilitation strategies depend on the specific type and extent of the injury, and may include medical interventions, therapy, and support services tailored to individual needs.

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

  • Concussion: A mild TBI usually caused by a blow or jolt to the head, resulting in temporary disruption of brain function.
  • Contusion: A bruise on the brain often caused by a direct impact to the head.
  • Penetrating Injury: Occurs when an object penetrates the skull and damages brain tissue.
  • Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI): Widespread damage to nerve fibres in the brain resulting from rotational forces during acceleration-deceleration injuries.

Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI)

  • Stroke: A disruption of blood supply to the brain, leading to brain tissue damage.
  • Anoxic Brain Injury: Caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting from events such as drowning, choking, or cardiac arrest.
  • Infectious Diseases: Infections like meningitis or encephalitis can cause inflammation and damage to the brain.
  • Tumors: Abnormal growths in the brain that can damage surrounding tissue and impair function.
  • Toxic Exposure: Exposure to certain chemicals or substances can lead to brain damage.
