PARKINSON'S DISEASE

What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition that primarily affects movement. It occurs when there is a shortage of dopamine in the brain, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement, and difficulty with balance and coordination. As the disease progresses, individuals may also experience non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment, mood changes, and disturbances in sleep patterns. Parkinson's can have a significant impact on daily life, affecting mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

CHALLENGES WITH PARKINSON'S DISEASE

Motor Symptoms

Functional Limitations

Non-Motor Symptoms

Parkinson's disease can cause a range of motor symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability (poor balance). These symptoms can make simple tasks such as walking, getting dressed, or eating more challenging.

Non-Motor Symptoms

Functional Limitations

Non-Motor Symptoms

In addition to motor symptoms, Parkinson's can also manifest with non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. These non-motor symptoms can significantly impact quality of life and may require specialised management.

Functional Limitations

The combination of motor and non-motor symptoms can lead to functional limitations, affecting an individual's ability to perform activities of daily living independently. This can result in increased dependence on others for assistance and a loss of autonomy.

How Can a Physiotherapist Help with Parkinson's Disease?

Exercise Therapy

Gait and Balance Training

Gait and Balance Training

At Rehab Therapist, our specialised neuro physiotherapists design tailored exercise programmes to address the unique needs and goals of individuals with Parkinson's disease. These programmes may focus on improving mobility, strength, flexibility, and balance, helping to manage motor symptoms and enhance functional abilities.

Physiotherapy interventions aim to improve gait (walking) and balance abilities, reducing the risk of falls and promoting independence in daily activities. This may involve exercises targeting core stability, proprioception, and coordination, as well as techniques to facilitate more efficient movement patterns.
